Every Voice Praises Anti-Foreign Bribery Resolution
Washington, D.C. — Today, money-in-politics reform group Every Voice praised Senator Ben Cardin (Md.) for introducing a resolution urging President-elect Donald Trump to divest from his businesses and place his assets in a blind trust.
“It’s basic commonsense, and it’s the law of the land as laid out by our Constitution. The occupants of the highest offices in our government must rid themselves of any appearance of corruption,” said David Donnelly, president and CEO of Every Voice. “We applaud Senator Ben Cardin and Senate Democrats for working to uphold our Constitution, especially following an election that unveiled a deep distrust of Washington and anger at big money’s power in our politics. Donald Trump ran on a pledge to drain the swamp of corporate and special interests. He has a clear opportunity to lead by example and show his commitment to the American people comes before his personal interests by divesting or creating a truly blind trust for his businesses. If he fails to do so, it’s incumbent on every member of Congress to act to uphold our Constitution.”
Senator Cardin introduced the resolution that calls for the enforcement of the commonsense and clear provision in the Constitution that prohibits the President and government officials from taking foreign bribes or gifts.
