Every Voice Praises Sen. Warren Bill to Prevent Presidential Conflicts of Interest

January 9, 2017 | Laura Friedenbach

Washington, D.C. — Today, money-in-politics reform group Every Voice praised Senator Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) and her colleagues for introducing legislation that would require presidents and vice presidents to divest from all assets that could result in conflicts of interest and place their assets in a blind trust.

“Following an election that unveiled deep anger at a government people don’t think is working for them, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senate Democrats are right to demand our president be free of conflicts that would put a cloud of corruption over their administration and open them up to bribery by foreign interests,” said David Donnelly, president and CEO of Every Voice. “It’s basic commonsense, and it’s the law of the land as laid out by our Constitution. The occupants of the highest offices in our government must make sure they’re number one priority is the American people, not their bank account. The Senate should move immediately to take up this legislation.”

Last month, on the day Donald Trump pledged to hold a conference about his businesses, Every Voice and five other groups delivered over 500,000 petition signatures to a handful of Trump properties around the country from Americans demanding that Trump sell his businesses and put his assets into a truly blind trust and that Congress investigate Trump’s conflicts of interest.

This week will mark  the 6th week since Donald Trump pledged to discuss how he will deal with his businesses, but has delayed doing so.

A recent Hart Research poll on behalf of Center for American Progress found that battleground state voters agree 71 percent to 18 percent that Trump should not be allowed to receive payments from foreign governments through his business holdings while serving as president and a majority believe Donald Trump is not doing enough to avoid conflict between his business holding and his role at president.

Sen. Warren was joined by 23 original co-sponsors to introduce this legislation including Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Al Franken (D-Minn.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.).
