Every Voice Responds to State of the Union Address

January 21, 2015 | Adam Smith

Washington, D.C.–National campaign finance watchdog Every Voice released the following statement tonight responding to President Obama’s State of the Union address.

“For the economy to work for everyone, Washington has to work for everyone. But in today’s Washington, President Obama is right — too often lobbyists on K Street rig the laws for the benefit of Wall Street, not Main Street. And Americans should know who is paying for campaign ads,” said David Donnelly, president of Every Voice. “Addressing the power of lobbyists and the role of dark money are good first steps. We are encouraged that the President has raised these issues, and look forward to him turning words into action.”

In the speech, President Obama said, “A better politics is one where we spend less time drowning in dark money for ads that pull us into the gutter, and spend more time lifting young people up, with a sense of purpose and possibility, and asking them to join in the great mission of building America.”

He also said, “lobbyists have rigged the tax code with loopholes that let some corporations pay nothing while others pay full freight,” mentioned “the constant fundraising,” and  reiterated his support for protecting, and strengthening, ballot access.
