Florida Speaker Corcoran Aims to Allow More Big Money in Politics

August 25, 2017 | Laura Friedenbach

Washington, D.C. – Florida Speaker of the House Richard Corcoran is siding with big donors as he pads his campaign coffers, said national money-in-politics group Every Voice following Speaker Corcoran’s call for a repeal of the state’s public campaign financing system and Governor Rick Scott’s backing of the idea.

“As Speaker Corcoran rakes in millions from big donors to pad his campaign coffers for a potential bid for Governor, he is now trying to cement his own advantage by allowing more money from special interests, lobbyists, and big donors into politics,” said David Donnelly, president and CEO of Every Voice. “Don’t be fooled. By taking aim at public campaign financing, Corcoran is clearly siding with big money. Governor Scott’s backing of this proposal is shameful yet predictable considering his history of siding with big donors.”

Florida’s public campaign financing system gives candidates governor the opportunity to run for office without the support of big donors by instead relying on small donations of $250 or less matched with public funds.

Every Voice is working with groups around the country to build momentum for policies that amplify the voices of everyday people and reduce the influence of big money in politics.

Across the country, small-donor public financing programs give candidates the opportunity to run without big money in places like Maine, Connecticut, Arizona, New York City (N.Y.), Seattle (Wash.), Portland (Ore.), Howard County (Md.), Montgomery County (Md.), and more.

“Voters are fed up with big-money politics and looking for leaders committed to limit their power, not giving them another boost. Instead of Corcoran’s attempt to rig the rules of our democracy further in favor of wealthy donors, special interests, and their lobbyists, political leaders should spend their time forwarding proposals to give more power to regular people, like for example, expanding public financing to Florida’s state legislative races,” said Donnelly.
