Sen. Bill Nelson: Where Does Judge Gorsuch Stand on Voting Rights and Money in Politics

February 3, 2017 | Adam Smith

Earlier this week, we expressed our concern about Judge Neil Gorsuch, Donald Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, and his troubling record on money in politics. He’s supportive of a legal standard that could lead to all contribution limits being overturned, something that would hand our elections completely over to wealthy donors and corporations. It’s the opposite of what our democracy should be–inclusive and reflective.

Before meeting with him today, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) said he has the same concerns:

“But I have real concerns about what I believe are two of the most fundamental rights in our democracy: the right to vote and the right to know who you are voting for. And I specifically want to know how the judge feels about the suppression of voting rights and about the amount of undisclosed, unlimited money in campaigns.”

Gorsuch should be pressed on these issues and asked whether he believes everyone deserves to be heard in our political system.
