Democrats Answer Constituents’ Call to Fix Broken Democracy with By the People Resolution

June 28, 2018 | Adam Smith

Washington, D.C. — House Democrats today introduced a bold, comprehensive resolution that answers the public’s call to fix our broken democracy and create a government that works for all of us. The Better Deal for Our Democracy Resolution was introduced Thursday by House Democracy Reform Task Force Co-Chair Rep. John Sarbanes and supported by 162 House members.

“Frustration is reaching a boiling point as Americans watch political leaders use their office for personal gain and reward wealthy donors while brushing aside the priorities most of us care about,” said Nick Nyhart, president and CEO of Every Voice Center. “The Better Deal for Our Democracy Resolution includes a bold set of reforms to give Americans what they’ve been asking for: a government that works for everyone, not just those who write big campaign checks.”

According to details released by Rep. Sarbanes’ office, policies included in the Better Deal for Democracy Resolution would:

- Empower the American Voter: We can protect and expand every citizen’s right to vote, safeguard our election infrastructure and put an end to partisan redistricting.

- Strengthen Our Nation’s Ethics Laws: We can end the revolving door in Washington, prohibit profiting from public service and reduce the outsized influence of lobbyists and big-money donors.

- Fix Our Broken Campaign Finance System: We can break the stranglehold on our democracy by the wealthy and well-connected and end the scourge of unaccountable secret money in our politics.”
