Every Voice Endorses Catherine Cortez Masto for Senate
Cortez Masto Will Strengthen Our Democracy and Reduce the Power of Money in Politics
Washington, D.C. — Today, national campaign finance watchdog Every Voice, endorsed Catherine Cortez Masto in the race to represent the state of Nevada in the U.S. Senate citing her commitment to reducing the power of money in politics and raising up the voices of everyday people in the political process.
Statement from David Donnelly, president and CEO of Every Voice, on endorsing Cortez Masto:
“Billionaires are spending millions to defeat Catherine Cortez Masto because they know if she’s elected, she’ll support a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and legislation to give everyday people a bigger voice in our political system. We’re proud to endorse Cortez Masto, who would be the first Latina U.S. Senator, because the Senate needs more people working to open up our political system to give everyday people from diverse backgrounds a bigger voice in politics.”
While Cortez Masto has pledged to support overturning Citizens United and legislation to reduce the power of big money in politics such as the Fair Elections Now Act which would implement a small-donor public financing system, her opponent Joe Heck does not support solutions to address voters’ concern on the issue.
For the first time in its 20-year history, Every Voice is formally endorsing candidates in key House and Senate races this cycle, supporting those who have pledged to fight for policies that’ll reduce the power of big money and give everyday people a bigger voice in politics.
Every Voice Action, an affiliated independent expenditure committee, will target reform-minded voters on this issue through strategic digital communications outreach in key battleground states.
This month, Every Voice made it’s first ever endorsement in the race for president, backing Hillary Clinton. In response, Clinton pledged to work with others to forward a pro-reform agenda saying, “To strengthen our democracy, we need to get secret, unaccountable money out of our politics and get the voices of Americans back in. Every Voice is leading that fight… If elected, this will be a top priority for my presidency. And I will be a strong partner to everyone working toward that goal.”
Poll after poll has shown that voters are fed up with our broken political system, and a bipartisan majority of Americans support an overhaul of our campaign finance system to reduce the power of money in politics. Seventy-two percent of Americans including majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents support small-donor public financing systems like those backed by Every Voice endorsed candidates, according to an Every Voice/Democracy Corps poll.
“The issue of money in politics is unavoidable this election season,” said Donnelly. “Voters are looking for candidates that understand their deep frustration with our political system and, importantly, who have a plan to fix it.”
Every Voice is a national nonpartisan organization fighting for a democracy that works for everyone.
