Every Voice Endorses Deborah Ross for Senate
Ross Will Strengthen Our Democracy and Reduce the Power of Money in Politics
Washington, D.C. — Today, national campaign finance watchdog Every Voice, endorsed Deborah Ross in the race to represent the state of North Carolina in the U.S. Senate citing her commitment to reducing the power of money in politics and raising up the voices of everyday people in the political process.
Statement from David Donnelly, president and CEO of Every Voice, on endorsing Ross:
“From her plan to reduce the power of lobbyists in Congress to her support for legislation to empower regular people in our political system, Deb Ross knows that it’s not enough to complain about our broken campaign finance system, you must have plans to change it. We’re proud to endorse her for Senate because, if elected, she’ll fight for a political system that works for all of us and not just the billionaires.”
Ross has said that if elected she will work to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United, legislation to give everyday people a bigger voice in our political system through small-donor public financing such as the Fair Elections Now Act, and the STOCK Act to ban insider trading by federal employees. Her opponent Richard Burr opposes these solutions to address voters’ concern about the power of big money in our politics. Burr voted against the STOCK Act in 2012 and has voted against overturning Citizens United.
For the first time in its 20-year history, Every Voice is formally endorsing candidates in key House and Senate races this cycle, supporting those who have pledged to fight for policies that’ll reduce the power of big money and give everyday people a bigger voice in politics.
Every Voice Action, an affiliated independent expenditure committee, will target reform-minded voters on this issue through strategic digital communications outreach in key battleground states.
This month, Every Voice made it’s first ever endorsement in the race for president, backing Hillary Clinton. In response, Clinton pledged to work with others to forward a pro-reform agenda saying, “To strengthen our democracy, we need to get secret, unaccountable money out of our politics and get the voices of Americans back in. Every Voice is leading that fight… If elected, this will be a top priority for my presidency. And I will be a strong partner to everyone working toward that goal.”
Poll after poll has shown that voters are fed up with our broken political system, and a bipartisan majority of Americans support an overhaul of our campaign finance system to reduce the power of money in politics. Seventy-two percent of Americans including majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents support small-donor public financing systems like those backed by Every Voice endorsed candidates, according to an Every Voice/Democracy Corps poll.
“The issue of money in politics is unavoidable this election season,” said Donnelly. “Voters are looking for candidates that understand their deep frustration with our political system and, importantly, who have a plan to fix it.”
Every Voice is a national nonpartisan organization fighting for a democracy that works for everyone.
