Every Voice Joins Hundreds Arrested at Capitol for the Democracy Awakening

April 18, 2016 | Laura Friedenbach

Today, Every Voice Center President and CEO Nick Nyhart was arrested by Capitol police along with 6 Every Voice staff and hundreds more in the culminating event to cap off a week of over a thousand arrests at the Capitol calling for a democracy that works for everyone, not just wealthy special interests.

Protestors sat in on the Capitol steps and lobbied members of Congress as part of the Democracy Awakening. Building on the work of Democracy Spring, the Democracy Awakening is demanding Congress work to reduce the power of money in politics, protect voting rights, and consider the President’s Supreme Court nominee.

“After nearly 25 years of working in the democracy reform community, I risked arrest today on behalf of Americans everywhere to tell politicians they must act now to restore power to everyday people,” said  Nick Nyhart, President and CEO at Every Voice Center. “People are fed up with a Congress that refuses to work to break down the barriers preventing every voice from being heard in our democracy and every vote from counting. We’re sending a powerful message to Congress that the people will not be ignored, and we’ll bring this fight to states and cities across the county if our leaders refuse to act.”
