Every Voice Calls for Fair Elections in New York following Indictment of State Senate Leader Dean Skelos

May 4, 2015 | Laura Friedenbach

Washington D.C. — Following New York Senate Leader Dean Skelos’ arrest and charges of extortion and seeking bribes, national campaign-finance reform watchdog Every Voice is releasing the following statement.

“How many indictments for pay-to-play corruption does it take for Albany to get its act together and pass Fair Elections legislation?” asked David Donnelly, president and CEO of Every Voice. “We can do better to ensure every New Yorker has an equal voice in Albany. Democracy requires leadership, and New York is in serious need of leaders. It’s time for Governor Cuomo and state legislators to stop tinkering around the edges and to pass bold, comprehensive reform that will empower everyday people in politics.”

A Fair Elections-style system would empower small donors, lower campaign contribution limits, end lobbyists pay-to-play schemes, and encourage stronger enforcement and transparency. Learn more at http://fairelectionsny.org/

Every Voice is focused on winning campaigns and policies to transform our political system into one that represents everyday people, not big donors. We’re building the political power necessary to create a democracy that’s truly of, by, and for the people.

Every Voice and Every Voice Center have recently come under new leadership. We will be expanding and diversifying our efforts to promote a democracy that works for all of us and responds to the voices of everyday people. Watch this space for specifics later in 2019.
