President Trump’s Executive Order Turns Churches Into Vehicles for More Secret, Unaccountable Money in Politics
Washington, D.C. — As President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order today giving charities and religious institutions the ability to endorse political candidates while keeping their tax-exempt status, money-in-politics reform group Every Voice warned the move would unleash more secret, unaccountable money into our politics.
“This is a clear handout to wealthy donors who will now have the opportunity to turn churches into vehicles for influencing our elections — all while keeping their donations anonymous and tax deductible,” said Every Voice president and CEO David Donnelly. “Trump appears determined to give big donors and special interests unknown levels of influence throughout his time as President.”
As the Campaign Legal Center explains in their new white paper on the topic, destroying the so-called Johnson Amendment would flood the swamp that Trump promised to drain by offering wealthy donors another way to influence elections anonymously.
