Every Voice on New Trump Ad Leveling Pay-To-Play Accusation: Trump “Should Be Careful”

October 12, 2016 | Laura Friedenbach

Washington, D.C. — Money-in-politics watchdog Every Voice released the following statement from president and CEO David Donnelly on a new ad from the Trump campaign attacking Hillary Clinton with pay-to-play allegations:

“The man with a foundation that acts as a self-dealing piggy bank used to cover his legal problems should be careful of throwing stones from his gold-plated glass house. We need leaders who will act, and not just complain, about our broken campaign finance system. First Trump criticized mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, but now begs for his money and praised him at a rally. He said he didn’t like Citizens United, but hired the architect of the case. He is hundreds of million dollars in debt to foreign banks, but has offered inadequate plans to address these conflicts of interest if elected.

“Americans concerned about the integrity of our political system have only one serious candidate in this race who has pledged to strengthen our broken democracy if elected and that’s Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump has talked a big game about money in politics, but has offered no policies to address it while simultaneously trying to delegitimize our democracy and elections.  Trump’s claims that this election is ‘rigged’ and his continued rhetoric undermining our system is a threat to democracy itself. This is a desperate attack from a man running out of time.”

Last year, Clinton released a bold, comprehensive plan to strengthen our democracy. Trump has offered no such plan, and his Party’s platform endorsed policies that would give big donors more power in our elections. Clinton has said she will make campaign finance reform “a top priority” if elected and has pledged to introduce constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. FEC decision in her first 30 days.

Every Voice, in offering its endorsement last month, pledged to work with Clinton to advance the agenda and to hold her accountable for failure to act.
